LMPSU Executive Profiles 2010-2011

Name: Sarah (Chaoying) Xu
Year of Graduation: 2011
Position on LMP Student Union: President of LMPSU

Responsibility in LMPSU: As the president of LMPSU, I lead a team of energetic and committed executives to build a community and provide resources to you, the LMP student. By listening to and incorporating your suggestions, I design and implement academic and social events with my team. This year, we started a series of seminars, called “Lunch and Learn”. Through this event, we heard talks from top researchers who discussed their novel findings, medical students who shared their ethical dilemma, and Chief forensic pathologist who satisfied our curiosities, among other speakers. The other part of “Lunch and Learn” is chatting casually and having lunches with these speakers. I hope that through our events, you were able to find a group of friends who share your passions, and form a network of mentors who can guide you in your journey. If you have ideas about future events, or have difficulties with a course, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Advice to share with younger students: One thing that I wish I realized earlier is the importance of networking. As a young student at the University of Toronto, you sit in the crowd of 5000 students in Convocation Hall. You may feel intimidated to approach your professors and form connections with them. Fear no more! The first step in forming a large network is to overcome your own nervousness. Although your professors may have a long list of credentials and numerous titles after their names, after all, they are offering time to help you during their office hours. So don’t be intimidated by their titles. In addition, it is helpful to think of several specific questions, prior to going to office hour. Also, when you end a meeting with a professor, you should always show your appreciation for their time and patience. If time permitting (and situation appropriate), ask for suggestions in terms of career path, or for suggestions on summer research opportunities. Use your networks!

Favourite Elective Courses: INI300 (Strategic Writing), TRN200 (Modes of Reasoning), and LMP405 (4th year thesis project).

Name: Lucy Duan
Year of Graduation: 2011
Position on LMP Student Union: Vice President Finance
Responsibility in LMPSU: Applying for funding, and keeping our money matters in cheque (haha) so we can have great events, with lots of delicious food. Also, working with the rest of the LMPSU team to plan and coordinate the year's series of academic and social events.
Advice to share with younger students: Take advantage of all the resources the University has to offer. Outside of LMP, class, and the life sciences in general, there are so many clubs to join, and some pretty spectacular seminars with invited guests from all over the world for almost ANY subject area you re interested in. Also, if you find courses tough, or want to talk about picking the right POSt, talk to upper years! We don t bite and we re here to help.
Favourite Elective Courses: PSY100: Introductory to Psychology - one of the most memorable courses. A lot of fun, and taught by an amazing professor: Dan Dolderman.
ENG215: Canadian Short Story - discovered a number of spectacular Canadian short story authors. Great discussion in class, and even had the opportunity to sit in on a reading by the author of a story we read.
LMP405: 4th year thesis project - I definitely think everyone in the LMP specialist should consider doing a project course, whether it be in LMP or not. You learn to think independently, analyze critically, and integrate the knowledge you ve gained from your courses.

Name: Ghassan Awad Elkarim Year of Graduation: 2013
Position on LMP Student Union: Second Year Representative
Responsibility in LMPSU: As the second year representative, I voice any concerns my peers have for upcoming events. I ensure that they are well informed about opportunities and available information sessions that can be helpful in making future decisions during their undergraduate career. If an event is going to be held, I make sure that the timing suits second year students. During LMPSU executive meetings, I pay particular attention to how the event will be meaningful and enjoyable for second year students. It is an honour to represent my fellow classmates and just as they believed in me, I will continue to work hard in representing them.
Advice to share with younger students: First, I would like to congratulate you for your hard work and dedication. I wish you all the best and future success! Time goes by quickly and you should make the best out of it. Make lasting friendships and don t be afraid to take on challenges. It s through those challenges that we learn new experiences and more importantly learn more about ourselves and what we are capable of. I was actually hesitant to run for second year representative, but I did anyhow. I wanted to challenge myself and also represent my peers. You should also challenge yourself, whether it be by taking on a role in a student union, starting your own club in university, or asking supervisors for research opportunities. Be confident in yourself!
Favourite Elective Courses: I actually took one elective course thus far: ANT253 Language and Society. Dr. Danesi is a wonderful professor that engages the students in the class. He makes us really laugh! The course may not have been the best in terms of organization and the material (to me) was not the most interesting. So here comes my recommendation, which you probably have heard of before: Go for something you have a strong feeling you ll enjoy learning about! GPA is important, but don t go for a course because many people say it s a bird course. There was a course I particularly enjoyed and it was IMM250. It was an introduction to immunology something that I haven t learned in high school. It was new and exciting, and that s why I was happy by taking the course!

Name: Desmond She

Position on LMP Student Union: Special Project Team
Responsibility in LMPSU: Secondary camera operator, clip-editing, and audio balancing.
Advice to share with younger students: Go out and join your student union; pitch in and contribute however you can, and make lasting friendships. It s easier to be in the trenches when you know someone else is in there with you!
Favourite Elective Courses: STA220H1: Introduction to Statistics, EAS110Y1: Standard Modern Korean I, and SOC101Y1: Introduction to Sociology.

Name: He Zhen Ren
Year of Graduation: 2013
Position on LMP Student Union: Special Project Team
Responsibility in LMPSU: Using documentations of previous and current events, construct an appealing video that introduces the program to undergraduate. Main role is post filming editing.
Advice to share with younger students: Live how you think will be the happiest way to live. If it is to get study done fast with no worries later, do it. If it is playing, and cramming at the last minute, do it, if it is seeking opportunities outside of university, do it. Do things with a gusto, and don't hide from the consequences. This way, you'll only have yourself to answer to.
Favourite Elective Courses: PSY100
